This book was absolutely phenomenal. Anyone who might operate in the prophetic or called to the off ice of the prophet will definitely benefit from this book. This book confirmed something’s about my calling and allowed me to understand the little things about my character that I looked at as being a bad thing until reading this book. I would definitely recommend this book. It will change your life. God Bless!!!!
One of the most accurate and truthful books on the prophet I have ever read.
Awesome book! God is so good… this has answered many of my questions concerning my inability to fit into the Christendom model. Thank God for people like John Eckhardt for the heart to speak forth truth. I would highly recommend this book. What Did You Expect?: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage Hardcover – April 6, 2010
Author: Visit ‘s Paul David Tripp Page ID: 1433511762
Review
“At once deeply theological and practically relevant, this is one of the top books on marriage I have ever read. Paul Tripp allows readers to examine marriage through a biblical lens so that we understand how God can graciously heal our hurting homes. As a pastor, I will implore our people to read this book as soon as it is available.”
—Chris Brauns, author, Unpacking Forgiveness; Pastor, The Red Brick Church, Stillman Valley, Illinois
“What I’ve come to expect from Paul Tripp is consistently deep, transparent, biblical, wise, practical, gospel-driven counsel. Rather than muddying the water with self-focused strategies designed to meet our ever-multiplying needs, Paul, as the seasoned soul-physician he is, correctly diagnoses our problems and provides the cure—humble faith in Jesus Christ. I wasn’t disappointed. You won’t be either.”
—Elyse M. Fitzpatrick, counselor; speaker; author, Give Them Grace and Comforts from the Cross
“Paul Tripp brings many years of counseling, growth as a husband, and deepening discovery of the liberating power of grace to this realistic and challenging guide to God’s engagement in redeeming marriages that are threatened by complacency, misunderstanding, and selfishness. The Bible’s message of the humbling and healing power of Christ’s mercy and the powerful presence of his Spirit in our homes comes through loud and clear. The daily practicality of gospel doctrine is made crystal clear by Tripp’s transparency about his personal missteps in becoming a Christ-reflecting husband and the many examples of couples who have discovered that they are sinners married to sinners. But that the third, divine Party in marriage gives hope and change when unrealistic expectations are shattered and when we confront our sin. But be warned: Tripp’s diagnostic questions are downright uncomfortable. Even those with strong marriages by God’s grace will find their deep tendencies toward self-coronation challenged!”
—Dennis E. Johnson, Professor of Practical Theology, Westminster Seminary, California
“Paul Tripp issues a challenge for couples to roll up their sleeves, get to work, and do what it takes to build a God-honoring relationship. He presents six commitments for couples to make, and contained within each is insightful, practical, and effective advice on how to construct a loving, growing, grace-soaked marriage.”
—Mary A. Kassian, Professor of Women’s Studies, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Girls Gone Wise in a World Gone Wild

My wife and I were able to sit through a recent marriage conference by Paul Tripp on Redeeming the Realities of Marriage. If you can go to one of his conferences, it is a great opportunity to enjoy a weekend together and talk through some of the areas that present growth opportunities in marriage.
Attending the live event is beneficial, but Tripp’s book What Did You Expect: Redeeming the Realities of Marriage is based on the material from the conference. Tripp begins by examining the "essential wisdom perspectives that Scripture gives us for a realistic expectation of marriage": 1) you are conducting your marriage in a fallen world; 2) you are a sinner married to a sinner; 3) God is faithful, powerful, and willing. Tripp then examines the centrality of worship in all of life and the importance of it in a proper understanding of marriage. We should especially view our marriage in light of the Kingdom of God because we are tempted to be about the process of building our own kingdoms in our life and our marriage. Our marriages will find healing as we align our lives with God’s Kingdom.
After explaining the importance of seeing your marriage in light of the Kingdom of God, Tripp structures the book by explaining six commitments that will encourage a lifestyle for a healthy and strong marriage:
1. We will give ourselves to a regular lifestyle of confession and forgiveness.
2. We will make growth and change our daily agenda.
3. We will work together to build a sturdy bond of trust.
4. We will commit to building a relationship of love.
5. We will deal with our differences with appreciation and grace.
6. We will work to protect our marriage.
Marriage is hard. To be a good husband or wife is even harder. The more we try, the more conscious we are of our failure. I guess that’s why there are so many marriage books. And why, after 1537 other Christian marriage books, the new ones continue to sell. And why, after reading several of the older ones, I continue to read new ones.
We hope to discover The Secret, whatever that is. But we don’t, because there’s not one. Having a strong marriage is just plain, hard work. But if we can be reminded that we aren’t perfect, that we haven’t arrived, that we, in fact, are far from "arriving," then something is gained. And if we glean a few tidbits that help us to become a better husband or wife, much is gained. So I’m grateful for Paul David Tripp’s new book on the old but important subject of marriage.
Tripp’s first line is my favorite: "For some reason I seem to be drawn to write about things I’m not very good at." This humility sets the tone, and the theme, for the whole book. Tripp doesn’t present himself as husband of the year, sitting on a lofty perch and tossing scraps of wisdom to the dogs. Instead, he passes on what he has learned through real experience, and what he is still learning, because he (like the rest of us) hasn’t arrived.
Tripp’s book is based upon six commitments, which are the major divisions of the book:
Nobody I know goes into marriage expecting the reality that actually happens. And then every last one of us is left to figure out how to manage the rest of our lives in this uncomfortable and sometimes downright painful situation we hadn’t anticipated. Some folks divorce; some bicker to the death; some grit their teeth and pretend everything’s OK; some settle for silent desperation/separation under the same roof. We Christians tend to grit our teeth and label it "holiness." No wonder our young adult children are not attracted to emulate our marriages.
A knowledgeable counselor friend of mine says he estimates that only 5% of marriages (whether inside or outside the Church) are actually functioning in a state of peace, harmony and fulfillment. Marriage is not what most people expected it to be. But it IS what God designed it to be. The problem is that most of us don’t want to know God’s plan; we prefer our own plan and along with it, we prefer to live in varying degrees of misery.
So along comes Paul Tripp. Many of the ideas he presents in What Did You Expect? are not new. I heard them in numerous counselors’ offices during the decades I was trying to save my own marriage. But Tripp synthesizes them more clearly than I have ever seen or heard them to date. And occasionally, he lays out original, mind-bending ideas I never have heard anywhere else.
With humility and compassion, with laser sharp insight, in understandable language, Mr. Tripp lays explosives under the foundation of everything the reader thinks he or she knows about marriage, and blows it sky high. Fortunately, Tripp also offers the tools for rebuilding the marriage with a much more substantial foundation using biblical principles with ample real-life examples for application.

My daughter received a copy of this book for her first birthday. She loved it, and especially loved touching the sparkly foil designs under each of the flaps.
Because she liked it so much, I ordered a copy for my friend’s child’s birthday. When it came, the description on the back of the book had been changed, and no longer are any of the pictures made of sparkly foil. The description on is inaccurate. It’s still cute, but definitely not as cute.
I bought this book for my son a few months prior to his first birthday to help him learn about the birthday celebration. I also didn’t want him to be frightened at his first birthday party with everyone singing to him, which is a lot of stimuli for a baby, so this book helped prepare him. This book is very colorful, filled with sparkley foiled pages and lots of cute surprises. It quickly became one of his favorite stories to read and was a well loved book. I now buy it as a first birthday gift for all the babies in our life. Karen Katz has yet again created a delightful book filled with whimisical illustrations that capture a baby’s attention. The "lift the flaps" concept is wonderful for babies and toddlers. This board book is sturdy, but not indestructible. The flaps are glued on, so they can be torn off, but they do repair reasonably well. A great addition to baby’s library!
I bought this for my granddaughters first birthday. She loved it and three months later is still trying to blow the candles out!

Bread and Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes MP3 CD – Audiobook, MP3 Audio, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s Shauna Niequist Page ID: 1501261479
Review
“Pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass of wine, and enjoy the friendship and hospitality found around Niequist’s table. The author of Cold Tangerines and Bittersweet serves up portions of friendship, family, and faith, with sides of humor, insight, and favorite recipes, for a satisfying read that can double as a group study.” – Publisher’s Weekly, Mar. 26
“Bread & Wine is a new book about an ancient meal, but more than a meal, a book about the people seated at the table, and about the laughing, and about the joy of saying hello and the pain of saying good-bye. After reading this book you may feel as you do driving away from dinner with a friend — grateful and full.”
– Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz and A Million Miles in a Thousand Years
“Shauna Niequist’s beautiful word painting in Bread & Wine is a poetic reminder to appreciate the rituals, people, and sensory experiences of our everyday lives. Her words invite us into her kitchen, and her stories challenge us to remain attentive to the many delights that complement life’s hardships and the ways in which we can share them with others.”
– Kelle Hampton, New York Times bestselling author of Bloom: Finding Beauty in the Unexpected
“No one combines all my treasured things like Shauna does in Bread & Wine: beautiful words, delicious food, recipes like the ones you jot down on the back of a napkin in shorthand, with hints and adaptations written off to the side, real-life stories, laughter. Then I read a sentence like this: "Love isn’t something you prove or earn, but something you receive or allow, like a balm, like a benediction, even at your very worst," and I decide to send this book to everyone I know.”
– Jen Hatmaker, author of Interrupted and 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess
Pull up a chair, pour yourself a glass of wine, and enjoy the friendship and hospitality found around Niequists table. The author of Cold Tangerines and Bittersweet serves up portions of friendship, family, and faith, with sides of humor, insight, and favorite recipes, for a satisfying read that can double as a group study. (A discussion guide and recommended readings are tucked in the back of the book, with recipes and a sample menu for book/cooking clubs.) Niequist writes with vulnerability and honesty that make the reader hunger to be one of the friends and family members who grace her table. Struggles with getting pregnant, juggling family and career, and making time for deep friendships are among the life events discussed against the backdrop of meals. Cooking enthusiasts, whether they are experienced or are novices, will enjoy the talk about food and will want to try the recipes featured at the end of each chapter. Yet while recipes for bacon-wrapped dates and dark chocolate sea-salted butter toffee sound yummy, the emphasis is more on spiritual nourishment and how God feeds hungry souls through relationships. I told myself upon receiving this book that I would read it slowly, savoring it like a well-aged Port. Well, forget that idea. I guzzled this book like light beer. It was so, well, me. I believe one of the keys to really enjoying this type of literature is finding a deep connection to the author – that the author is someone who you think, "I could hang out with this person for an evening." Mid-way through this book I told my wife and a good friend. "Shauna is the female version of me."
While I don’t write half as eloquently as Shauna, I think I’ve shared her sentiments about food, hospitality and joie de vivre on multiple occasions – around tables, cooking with the guys in my cooking club or even, on occasion from the pulpit. So, I have nothing bad to say about this book. If you love food, hospitality, cooking, wine and just-for-the-fun-of-it dinner parties; if your idea of a great night is a house full of people and a whole afternoon spent cooking and smiling as you anticipate your guests; if you love having people in your home; if your idea of a good dinner is one that lasts several hours; if you love to give a good toast – to lock eyes with the people you love across a candlelit table and tell them why they’re important to you; if you believe that everything is spiritual, and maybe especially food; if you love a well crafted sentence and rich metaphor, then this is your book.
My only argument with this book is some of the early reviews I’ve seen. To quote one, "this is a wonderful book for women" For women? I’m not a woman, and I loved it.
There is much to enjoy about Shauna Niequist’s bloggy book about the profundities of eating and drinking, and much of my enjoyment comes from my admiration for Niequist’s honest–and sometimes quasi-confessional–approach to food. She eats cobbler for breakfast. She discusses the tangled relationship between food and shame in a way that’s both sympathetic and sensible; "I feel this pain, and it’s real, but I can deal with it."
As when reading any book about food, I found that I left Niequist’s book with a gnawing stomach. The recipes, mmm. The menu pairings, mmm-ier.
At the same time, I also found myself not particularly hungry for the sort of thing that Niequist wants most to render attractive–the fellowship that she asserts comes with eating and drinking well with friends. Perhaps it’s me–introverted me–but reading about dinner party after dinner party left me, though ready and primed for a fine meal, weary from the thought of so many people and so much talk. Food for Niequist is sacramental in both symbolic resonance and function–and this is a truth upon which she’s right to insist. Yet I found myself wondering: could food be as functionally sacramental if it weren’t so lush as it consistently is through this series of essays? Could a scrambled egg and toast, shared with an old friend over a glass of milk, serve the same function that the bacon-wrapped figs and ever flowing wine do? Could equally beautiful moments be made on a George Foreman grill in a college dorm room, or must Wusthof knives and Le Creuset cookware be involved in the preparation for it to be valuable? In short, how beautiful must the food be for the food experience to be beautiful as well? Lewis’s shorter works were generally originally composed as speeches or as articles for periodicals. Various sets of them were collected and published in book form both during his life and after his death. Trying to determine what works are in what collections is difficult – most works appear in more than one collection, some works appear under more than one title, and some collections appear under more than one title.

From the Back Cover
Addressing some of the most difficult issues we face in our day-to-day lives, C. S. Lewis's ardent and timeless words provide an unparalleled path to greater spiritual understanding. Considered by many to be his most moving address, "The Weight of Glory" extols a compassionate vision of Christianity and includes lucid and compelling discussions on forgiveness and faith.

To aid readers, in this review I’ve listed the works in this collection, with notes indicating other collections they have appeared in.

Have Christians in America "missed it"?
In other words, have we in the land of the free not fully grasped, appreciated, and embraced what it truly means to be followers of Jesus Christ? Francis Chan answers that question with an emphatic "yes" in his bestselling book, Crazy Love. It has caused quite a stir since its release in 2008. Better late than never, I decided to get a copy and read it for myself.
Chan’s critique boils down to this: "The goals of American Christianity are often a nice marriage, kids who don’t swear, and good church attendance." In other words, not much else besides that.
In the first two chapters, Chan talks about the greatness of God, and how He is far bigger, more holy, more loving, and more merciful than we realize. He then reminds us how short our lives are when compared to eternity, and hence how little time we have to do good works for God’s kingdom.
Following are the next two chapters, where he profiles the lukewarm-those who say they are Christians, but the way they live runs counter to their confession of faith.
Chan then describes what true love for God looks like-namely in acts of service towards others, especially those who are less fortunate.
In chapter nine, the author profiles several people who are his ideal-that is to say, they have lived in such a way to demonstrate their radical love for Jesus. And in the final chapter, Chan issues a final challenge to his readers to truly live for Christ.
On the One Hand…
Chan is right that in far too many instances, the lives of churchgoers are little different from their non-churchgoing neighbors, and that there is too little emphasis upon service and humility.

I bought this book during very trying period with my 22 year old son. I had reached a point where it was difficult to even pray for him….sometimes out of anger, sometimes out of no longer knowing WHAT to pray for, sometimes out of sheer exhaustion with the situation. I found this book extremely helpful as it not only gave me words to pray, and scriptural promises to hang on to, but also let me know that there are other parents out there facing agonizing trials with their kids as well. I would highly recommend it to any hurting parent regardless of age, gender, or the circumstances you and your child might be going through.
This book has been such a blessing to my husband and me. It’s so difficult when you have a prodigal. You often feel condemned by others, confused by your child’s actions, and alone. This book helps put the focus on prayer for your child and really speaks to what we’re going through.
This was a wonderful book of prayers that parents can pray for their children. It consists of 13 weeks of prayers, a prayer for each day of 90 days. The prayers are scripturally based, providing inspiration and support to parents who are having some difficulties with or even worries about their children, young and old. Scriptural references are provided throughout the book. I found some of the prayers to be appropriate for any parent to pray for their child. I thought it was a great book of prayer and I would highly recommend this book to parents who are wanting to pray for the faith and salvation of their child. As parents, the lives and decisions of our children weigh heavy on our hearts, and this is one book that would help to begin a habit of praying daily for your son/daughter. It also provides a solid and faithful example of a life of prayer. Each week of prayers is proceeded by an introduction for the focus of the prayers that week. The weekly introductions include personal stories from the author and biblical stories that add to the quality of the explanations. Each introduction is encouraging and provides hope for the answer to prayer.
